THANK YOU for helping me achieve my targeted GMAT scores in a short period of time. After our first meeting, your positive outlook and feedback were very reassuring. Helping me identify what I had possibly missed while preparing for the test previously, I realized I could break the 700 point barrier if I prepared well and used the ‘right’ tips and tricks. All in all, a huge thank you. It really was very nice knowing you Ben, and I just hope we have more teachers like you. Nisha Agrawal (GMAT 720)

FROM THE MOMENT I decided to pursue an MBA, I tried hard to find ways to avoid the GMAT. Unfortunately, if you intend to go to pretty much any top business school, the GMAT is a necessary evil. Alas, what could I do? GMAT it is then. I soon discovered the GMAT to be a strange beast – strange in that fluency in English and proficiency in Math won’t necessarily guarantee results. For me, it was a pretty baffling exercise at times. Perhaps not surprisingly, my first attempt at GMAT was pretty dismal. I’m not entirely sure how different I was between my two GMAT attempts, but I suppose it finally ‘clicked’. Ben had been a great encouragement throughout and continued to give me more exercises and practice tests, while I also re-reviewed the Math lessons that I had previously taken with Ms Wong.
Ultimately, there is no escaping at least 2-3 hours (or more during weekends and when time permits) of work every night, which includes not only doing the exercises but, more importantly, reviewing the answers. Juggling a full-time day job and studying by night was not easy, but at least I was getting better… somehow.

MyAdmissions Consulting Experience…
With GMAT out of the way, I assumed that the admissions process would be a walk in the park by comparison. How mistaken I was – it may be different, but it is by no means less challenging. Admissions essays often require you to dig deep into your experiences and to reflect meaningfully on what you want to achieve both professionally and personally – while analysing problems and issues comes more easily to me, it becomes paralysingly difficult when the subject matter itself is me. And it is in Admissions Consulting that I feel Ben really excels. Ben was a mentor and counsellor, friend and devil’s advocate, and we spent countless hours bouncing ideas around. Looking back, the number of essays that were thrown back (metaphorically) at me is quite amusing, and I have to agree with Ben that some were simply too run-of-the-mill or just plain boring. Surely I had more interesting experiences? It is through these many conversations with Ben that some of my experiences, which I had either taken for granted and dismissed or buried so deep at the back of my head that they were forgotten, began to be rediscovered.
Happy Days…
That I had applied to only two schools not only reflects the time and effort required to draft and redraft application essays (not to mention managing my references), but also points to the importance of having a realistic and targeted strategy. I wanted to experience a new culture, and so I quickly eliminated English-speaking countries. And when I began researching good MBA programs that would give me a balance between professional and personal growth, the search led me to IESE and ESADE. Both fit my aspirations, and I would not hesitate in going to either one. Happily, both schools came back with offers for admissions as well as a scholarship. Having reflected deeply at my experiences, worked hard for my GMAT and applications, and considered meaningfully on future plans, I will now be moving onto the next phase in life with greater self-assurance.
Lastly, my gratitude to Ben; not only for his straight-talking, but also his constant encouragement and generosity. It was pretty demoralizing at times, but I think Ben – in retrospect – certainly had more faith in me than I did.
